Woodard & Curran is seeking a Wastewater Operator/Operator Trainee at our Provincetown, Massachusetts Wastewater Treatment Facility. What will you need to succeed?

* The ability to obtain a “Full” Massachusetts municipal wastewater treatment operator’s license within 1 year.  Will accept an O.I.T license.
* Ability to obtain 1B hoisting license to operate facility boom equipped vehicles.
* Minimum of two years’ experience in a wastewater treatment facility, operations, and maintenance; or any equivalent combination of education. Will consider entry level with minimal professional experience in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment facility and collection system.
* Must be able to work in inclement weather and perform maintenance in tight / confined spaces specific to tanks and manholes.
* Basic maintenance skills on mechanical equipment to include pumps and valves.
* Effective verbal and written communication skills.
* High School graduate or equivalent, with technical/vocational school background.
* Applicant must possess a valid Drivers License and a good driving record and must be able to lift or move up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.

This position’s anticipated pay range is provided below; final exempt salary or non-exempt hourly pay will be dependent on experience level as well as considering a % based geographic differential based on where the final candidate will be working. Geographic differentials are used to recognize and reflect cost of labor differences between geographic markets.

WATER TREATMENT & PUMPING OPERATOR I

General Statement of Duties:  This is technical work involving the operation and maintenance of the Town’s potable (drinking) water treatment plant and pumping, storage tank, pressure regulating and groundwater well facilities. Persons assigned to this class are considered apprentice operators and are supervised by trained operators or supervisory personnel. Performs general operational and maintenance assignments on buildings, grounds and equipment at the potable (drinking) water treatment plant, groundwater well facilities, pumping stations, storage tank and pressure regulating facilities.

Inspects, cleans and lubricates equipment such as pumps, motors, switchgear, generators and other plant and facility equipment or machinery.  Makes periodic and scheduled readings and interprets gauges, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, meters and control panels of treatment plant, well, pumping station, storage tank and pressure regulating equipment.  Maintains and completes shift logs, records meter and gauge readings.  Completes reports related to water production, water quality, power consumption and the use of treatment chemicals and other consumable supplies.

Additional Duties:  Operates plant machinery, including special gates, valves, engines and pumps relating to the control of flows and chemical treatment of water.  Operates and performs relatively complex maintenance on mechanical and electrical equipment, including pumps and switchgear, power generator equipment, chemical feed pumps, jet flash mixer, instrumentation systems and related equipment. Assists in the cleaning of tanks and facilities related to water treatment and residues.

Observes variations in plant operating conditions and performs process control adjustments under the direction of the Chief Operator, the Water Treatment and Pumping Supervisor or Level II Water Treatment and Pumping Operators. Conducts water quality sampling and performs routine or specialized laboratory analyses as directed.  Performs custodial functions and other related work as required or assigned. May be subject to rotational shift work as assigned and emergency calls.

Supervision Received: Works under the direction of the Water Treatment and Pumping Supervisor, who reports to the Assistant Superintendent of Water Supply and Treatment, or other operators and/or supervisors as assigned.

Supervision Exercised:  None

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Knowledge of machinery operation and maintenance techniques; good knowledge of computers, mathematics, chemistry and related physical sciences; good knowledge of repair procedures of motors, pumps, power generators and related operational equipment; basic knowledge of electricity and electrical operational requirements. Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions; ability to prepare, perform, and evaluate mechanical and laboratory test readings. Ability to assist with the completion of records and written reports, including State of Connecticut forms and documents.

Ability to be promoted to a Level II Water Treatment and Pumping Operator upon obtaining the necessary years of experience, certifications and acceptable performance reviews. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, municipal officials, and the general public.

Qualifications:  High school diploma or high school equivalency diploma supplemented by one (1) year of demonstrated experience involving the operation and maintenance of equipment of the type predominant in water supply and treatment; or a technical high school diploma with demonstrated career and technical education related to electronics technology, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, or water supply and treatment activities and operation; or completion of a program in water management

Special Requirements:  A State of Connecticut Department of Public Health Class I or higher Water Treatment Plant Operator certification (WTP I), and completion of a program in water management or the ability to obtain both within twelve (12) months from the date of hire. The probationary period may be extended up to an additional six (6) months for up to eighteen (18) months total in order to obtain the requisite State of Connecticut Department of Public Health Class I Water Treatment Plant Operator certification and completion of a program in water management.  Must maintain the WTP I certification in good standing.  Must possess and maintain a valid State of Connecticut motor vehicle operator’s license.

The Concord, MA staff is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant and the building and grounds. The Maintenance Operator will be responsible not only for process monitoring and adjustments but will perform basic to advanced mechanical and electrical repairs on pumps, compressors, screenings equipment, UV disinfection systems, valves, HVAC equipment, and various types of electrical equipment including VFDs, UPSs, power systems, and much more. Our operators participate in an “on call” rotation for plant coverage outside normal workday hours and shifts may include weekends. Staff receive a stipend for being on-call and are eligible for overtime hours while on-call In addition, operators will be required to respond to emergency situations and work in inclement weather as needed. Collection System Operator in Training

The City of Torrington has an opening for the position of Collection Systems Operator in Training at the Water Pollution Control Plant.

Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma and minimum of 2 years of experience as a truck driver or operator of construction or maintenance equipment.  Experience in the operation and maintenance of sanitary sewer collection systems is desirable.  Nine continuing education units in the field of wastewater treatment.  Must possess and maintain a NEWEA or equivalent State certification as a Collection Systems Operator Grade II or higher within twenty-four months.  A valid State of Connecticut CDL class B with airbrakes and tanker endorsements.

This is skilled work involving the installation, cleaning, maintenance, repair, and monitoring of the city’s sanitary sewer collection system.  Ability to maintain proper and accurate records.  Responsible for ensuring that all assigned equipment is functional and in safe operating condition.

Responsibilities include unit processes such as preliminary treatment, primary treatment, secondary treatment, chlorine/Ultraviolet disinfection solids processing, solids receiving, thickening (both gravity and dissolved air floatation), dewatering, wet weather, heat recovery /electrical production and all associated equipment.

Work involves responsibility for safe and efficient operations of aforementioned assigned processes. This position has responsibility for implementing operational changes and recommending process control adjustments in all areas of the facilities in accordance with established procedures. This position works varying shifts and overtime assignments.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

A high school diploma or the equivalent plus one year of experience in water pollution control plant operations. Effective working experience with Windows Office Software. Experience in SAP and Hach WIMS is desirable. Ability to work with SCADA systems for effective process monitoring.

Must possess a valid driver’s license and a CT Wastewater Class I Certification for the labor grade of LT-08 ($33.77 – $40.55) or CT Wastewater Class II Certification for the labor grade of LT-09 ($35.46 – $42.53)

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Inspects and operates all treatment plant equipment to ensure proper functioning, makes adjustments to operating equipment, reports the need for major or specialized repairs to equipment, machinery and electrical and control systems, assists specialized trades personnel in making major and/or highly technical repairs to equipment, machinery and systems. Performs preventative, predictive and corrective maintenance and assists maintenance in performing repairs.
Gathers information for input into the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA), Hach WIMS and other data and computerized control systems.
Operates all wastewater treatment equipment, machinery and facilities by using manual, electronic and computer control systems to regulate and control processes.
Monitors gauges, meters, charts, graphs and operates pumps, valves, electric motors, adjusting related equipment to operational needs.
Collects wastewater samples and performs laboratory tests associated with process and permit requirements; cleans tanks and maintain buildings and grounds.
Understands and operates all processes including incineration, waste heat recovery and electrical generation, chemical and ultraviolet disinfection, including cleaning and replacing ultraviolet lamps.
Performs work in a safe manner and observes all safety procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment. Performs work or lower classifications, as necessary.
Uses all tools, equipment and materials responsibly, performs inspections. Responds to emergencies as directed at any time of day or night.
Observes and accurately reports plant process and equipment problems. Completes job or shift report forms, as assigned. Performs basic mathematical, statistical, geometric and algebraic calculations common to treatment quantification and laboratory analysis. Operates personal computers with the ability to apply and use various processing software programs.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and construction of utility infrastructures, such as
manholes, sewer lines, drains and other assets. Cleans and inspects utility equipment such as basins, pumps, meters, sewers,
regulators, generators, and other equipment. Assists in completing appropriate paperwork regarding work activities.
Operates various equipment in the maintenance and cleaning of utility infrastructures, such as TV Cameras, vactors, flushers,
diggers, etc. Assists other plan and utility staff with operations, repairs, and related maintenance. Inspects the grounds and
equipment of pump, septage, and meter stations and related facilities. Maintains and prepares vehicles and equipment for
daily operations. Performs a variety of manual labor in the maintenance of NBC grounds and facilities, such as shoveling snow
and assisting with the maintenance and repair of equipment. Performs other duties of similar nature or level. Considered an
essential personnel position, expected to report for duty under all weather conditions.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma, or G.E.D.; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient
to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Valid Driver’s license in good standing. Must obtain a valid Commercial Driver’s License, Class B with
Tanker endorsement within one year of appointment. This is a safety sensitive position. Must be able to meet Federal DOT
requirements.
