ABOUT INFLOW

The New England Water Environment Association (NEWEA) is looking for the next generation of leaders in the clean water industry.

The Introducing Future Leaders to Opportunities in Water (InFLOW) scholarship program aims to enhance the diversity and inclusion in the water workforce.

InFLOW, which is organized through NEWEA’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) Committee, helps to identify promising students and young professionals from underrepresented groups who are interested in careers in the water industry. This scholarship opportunity engages scholars and young professionals within community based organizations to:

  • Solidify their interest in and awareness of opportunities for work in the water sector.
  • Increase probability for employment and long term success working in water

Two Paths: STEMPATH and CAREERTECH

There are two potential paths that either current students or young professionals can apply for:

STEMPATH:

A university undergraduate or graduate student from a historically underrepresented group who is pursuing an education and/or career in one of the following disciplines: Engineering (all), Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, STEM/Charter Academies, Public Health.

CAREERTECH:

A student attending any Vocational/Trade Schools, Certificate Programs, or adult education classes related to science/technology, or an employed profession looking to engage in a career change involving: Communication, Facilities Management, Operations, Engineering Business Development, Laboratory, Adult Education, Mechanical (automotive).

PARTICIPANT BENEFITS

Membership
Complimentary NEWEA/WEF Student membership for 1 year.

Conference Attendance
Free Admission to the 2027 NEWEA Annual Conference held January 24-27, 2027 at the Boston Marriott Copley Place in Boston, Massachusetts

Committee Involvement
A Water Industry professional will be assigned to guide the participant through the program.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS

Eligibility for Program Requires you to Meet the Following:

  • To participate in the STEMPATH track, individuals must be:
    • A full-time undergraduate or graduate student at a participating School/University​
    • In your junior or senior year or a master student in Fall 2025
    • Majoring in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) field​ (note majoring in engineering is not required)
  • To participate in the CAREERTECH track, must be student attending any Vocational Schools, Certificate Programs, Trade School or adult education classes related to science/technology, or an employed profession looking to engage in a career change.
  • 18 years of age or older ​by the time you attend the Annual Conference
  • Represents a historically underrepresented group including but not limited to:
    • Racial and ethnic minority groups (including those who identify as Black/African, Caribbean/West Indies, Hispanic/LatinX, Asian/Pasifika, and Native Americans/First Nations)
    • Members of the LGBTQ+ community
    • People with disabilities
  • Experience in water is not required, but an interest in the water industry is encouraged.​

Responsibilities

  • Required to participate in online activities throughout the program (February 2026 to January 2027).
  • Required to attend NEWEA’s Annual Conference January 24-25, 2027 at the Boston Marriott Copley Place in Boston, MA, and fully participate in all scheduled activities​
  • Willing to fully participate with NEWEA Staff, Sponsors, & Members before and after Annual Conference 2027
  • Responsibly represent their School/University/Organization during NEWEA InFLOW events and while at the Annual Conference.
  • Follow Massachusetts State and Federal Laws, including not consuming alcohol if under 21.​
  • Complete an exit survey to provide feedback on your experience with the program and improvements that can be made to make future programs more successful.

Become a Mentor

Volunteer as a water industry mentor to guide an InFLOW participant through the program.

Sponsor and Donate

Provide financial assistance to support the success of this program and the development of a new water professional.
