We are New England’s Water Environment Association

The New England Water Environment Association is a dynamic organization of over 2100 highly qualified and motivated water and wastewater professionals located throughout New England, who volunteer their time, energy, and expertise in order to preserve, protect, and manage one of our most precious resources here in New England, our water environment. Our members contribute to “the friendly exchange of information and experience.” As a volunteer organization, we exist solely because of the involvement and contribution of each member. Visit our membership page to join our outstanding association!

All business relative to the operation and well being of NEWEA is conducted by the Executive Committee.

NEWEA offers many opportunities to volunteer and support our committees. Learn how YOU can get involved in a committee.

Because we are a volunteer organization that provides so much in the way of training, resources, and experience in such a vital environmental field, we look for ways to recognize, recommend, and encourage one another. NEWEA and WEF awards provide just that.

NEWEA is a not-for-profit professional member association and a 501(c)(3) organization.

Mission

NEWEA’s mission is to promote education and collaboration while advancing knowledge, innovation, and sound public policy for the protection of the water environment and our quality of life.

Our 92-year History

“The Object of this Association shall be the advancement of knowledge of design, construction, operation, and management of sewage works and the encouragement of a friendly exchange of information and experience.”

Those words are from Article II of the Constitution of the New England Sewage Works Association, formalized on April 23, 1929. That meeting to organize the New England Sewage Works Association was held at the Bond Hotel in Hartford, Connecticut, on April 23, 1929.

As Dennis L. Keschl (President 1988-1989) wrote in his President’s message in 1989, “Our accomplishments over the years reveal a history of continuing success under a strong, capable leadership. We have made tremendous strides, building on a solid foundation of previous decades’ accomplishments.” This message still rings true today.

The continued success of NEWEA lies in the continuity of dedication that began with the group of 8 founders, and the 40 original members who signed on as Charter Members in 1929. Today, with over 2100 dedicated members, this Association is evidence our founders knew exactly what was needed to preserve, protect, and manage New England’s water environment for years to come.
