EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Operates, maintains, inspects, cleans and performs basic repairs on all equipment, pumps, motors and machinery related to the wastewater treatment processes and facility. Performs sampling and laboratory analysis as required for operational control. Conducts periodic and scheduled readings of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, and reads and interprets gauges, meters and control panels for treatment plant equipment and processes. Maintains accurate and precise documentation of treatment facility equipment and process functions, such as shift logs, and meter and gauge readings. Performs the work of a lower classification as required. Shall be responsible for process operation during a specific tour of duty. Performs simple electrical, plumbing, masonry and carpentry work as required. Performs all work in a safe, efficient manner. Performs other related work as assigned.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES: Upon completion of the probationary period will be subject to “on-call” duty, emergency calls or scheduled overtime work as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Ability and aptitude to understand and follow complex written and oral instructions. Knowledge of wastewater treatment principles and processes, and laboratory analysis. Knowledge of equipment and machinery operation and maintenance used in wastewater treatment facilities. Knowledge of local and State regulations concerning municipal wastewater treatment. Must be able to perform all physical requirements of the position, including working outside in inclement weather. Good ability to learn and apply new skills, and adapt to new methodologies and technology. Good ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, other municipal employees and the general public.

QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or high school equivalency diploma. A State of Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) Class II Operator or higher certification; or a Class II Operator-in-Training or higher certification.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must maintain the Class II Operator certification in good standing. Must possess and maintain a valid Connecticut motor vehicle operator’s license.

MRWC has a main office in Lawrence, Massachusetts and a secondary office in Concord, New Hampshire. About the Position: The Program Analyst will be supervised by the Water Quality Program Manager and the Director of Policy and Outreach. The Program Analyst will work closely with MRWC staff to expand, integrate and manage MRWC’s activities in: 1) water quality monitoring, and 2) engagement of a diverse group of stakeholders to solve water related issues. The Program Analyst will implement programing to monitor the physical, chemical and biological integrity of the Merrimack River and its tributaries. The Program Analyst will grow and manage a wide network of diverse water quality monitoring volunteers.

Key Responsibilities:

Water Quality Monitoring Program coordination (Approximately 75% of work)
o Manage MRWC’s volunteer-based water quality monitoring on
the Merrimack, including regular year-round sampling and
hotspot monitoring.
o Adjust and improve the program over time to ensure program
is scientifically sound and efficient
o Manage data collection, data recording
o Maintain water quality monitoring equipment and supply
inventory
o Analyze samples using our in-house IDEXX system
o Support the Water Quality Project Manager in the following:
-Data analysis, and technical reporting.

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) is partnering with UMass Amherst to provide technical and training support for the development and implementation of Safe Drinking Water Programs, in particular the Lead and Copper Rule Revisions, Lead and Copper Rule Improvements, and Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Rule. 

UMass is hiring Research Fellows to assist MassDEP with Safe Drinking Water programs by providing assistance with the operational, technical, financial, and managerial aspects of public water systems (PWS) in Massachusetts. 

Example position responsibilities include (full responsibilities in position descriptions below): 

• Review PWS Service Line Inventory and Lead Service Line Replacement Plans 

• Assist MassDEP in the development of technical guidance, procedures, and programs in preparation for future changes to PFAS regulations 

• Review water quality results and discuss drinking water remediation options with PWS 

Research Fellows will provide technical support to one identified MassDEP regional office (or Boston office). Over the past two years the Merrimack Wastewater Treatment Facility has been undergoing a major upgrade on our 50 year old system. We are looking for a dynamic and motivated individual to help contribute the long tradition of excellence in plant operations, maintenance and composting.

This is skilled and supervisory work participating in the operation of municipal wastewater treatment facilities. Work involves responsibilities for assuring the safe and efficient operation of the wastewater facility and wastewater pumping stations. Work requires a technical knowledge of wastewater processes and requires the use of independent judgment in solving operating problems.

Minimum Qualifications
NH Grade IV Wastewater License or a NH Grade III Wastewater License with the ability to obtain a NH Grade IV within six months is required. The ideal candidate should have the equivalent of a B.S. in a related field (i.e. Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science etc.) along with 3-5 years of relevant progressively responsible supervisory experience in a similar position,

any equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Active involvement with internal project team and owner project representatives on project activities
Perform or assist with the performance and commercial management of projects including budgeting, invoicing, and payments; lead project performance reviews for assigned project(s).
Staff management:

Team development, mentoring and coaching on performance improvement
Recommendations for training and promotion of assigned professionals as well as identification and development of new candidates to expand the Black & Veatch team
Management Responsibilities
Acts as a project manager. Among responsibilities is management of a project team. The individual comprising this team may vary by project.
Preferred Qualifications
10 + years of active water/wastewater experience with demonstrated leadership experience in the Boston market
Professional Engineering License; Bachelor’s Degree in technical discipline
Understanding of budgets and financial metrics
Contract negotiation skill including knowledge of terms, risks, pricing and payment terms
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
