As a Wastewater Operator II, you’ll join a collaborative team ensuring that our clients can deliver their services – uninterrupted. Based in Southbridge, MA, you’ll have the opportunity to perform a variety of tasks in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant including maintenance of equipment and quality control testing, report compilation, recordkeeping, and adhere to compliance with policies and procedures. You’ll contribute to the success of our program with efficient preventive maintenance and effective solutions to complex challenges that may arise in municipal facilities. You’ll diagnose operating problems, monitor and control adjustments and determine proper rates in the treatment facilities to control flow and processing of water/wastewater, sludge, and effluent. Here’s what you’ll need:
Certification at a level required by the State of Massachusetts

At least three (3) years of experience in operating water/wastewater treatment plants

Advanced understanding of computer software including Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to enter data into a maintenance management system

A valid driver’s license

As the Wastewater Treatment Supervisor, you’ll work with project staff to oversee compliance reporting, maintenance of equipment and quality control testing. Partnering with other team members and our client, you’ll apply knowledge of the principles, methods and tools employed in the general operation of engines, pumps, valves, motors and related equipment, wastewater process control, permit compliance, and safe work practices. You’ll also have the opportunity to: monitor, record and operate two wastewater treatment plants, provide SCADA system overview; diagnose operating problems and direct effective correction procedures; prepare required reports and maintain complete recordkeeping procedures; analyze recording instrument readings and process laboratory testing results and adjust various plant processes accordingly; perform plant inspections to determine and maintain efficiency of operations, cleanliness, and assist with maintenance activities including remedial action in emergencies; supervise, evaluate and train employees and perform other duties as required.

Procurement Specialist

DER seeks a skilled procurement professional with a passion for collaboration and healing the environment. This is an exciting and historic time to join the DER team, which has awarded $12 million of grant funding so far in FY25, reconnected 316 river miles, and restored over 40 acres of salt marsh. DER currently has 66 active Priority Ecological Restoration Projects in various stages of design and permitting, with 11 in construction.

The Procurement Specialist position is a collaborative role within the Division’s Fiscal Team. It works with Branch Managers, Program Managers, Operations, Communications, and other staff to achieve DER’s mission of restoring and protecting rivers, wetlands, and watersheds for the benefit of people and the environment.
The Procurement Specialist will be responsible for oversight and administration of:

  • Leading grant procurement and administrative activities resulting in the successful award of operational and capital funding and full compliance with all department and oversight entity policies, procedures, and regulations. This will include activities such as preparing relevant documentation such as contracts and scopes of work, preparing and submitting grant documents to awardees, and collaborating with DER program staff regarding the ongoing administration of grants.
  • Lead the coordination of new grant opportunities, including providing oversight and technical assistance during the grant application process and award negotiations, collaborating with program staff to coordinate implementation efforts for new grants, and working with program staff to identify grant needs.
  • Collaborate with the Finance Manager and other fiscal team members on important compliance and reporting tasks such as record management and retention, closeout activities, and reporting efforts.

The Procurement Specialist will report directly to the Division Finance Manager and work in close collaboration with staff across the division, including:

  • Fiscal Team members
  • Branch Managers
  • Program Managers
  • Project Managers
  • Communications staff
  • Operations staff

Success in this position requires strong creative and critical thinking skills to navigate the complexity and interdisciplinary nature of DER’s work, including a strong sense of collaboration and creative thinking and problem-solving skills. Success in this position will also require robust experience in fiscal management, staff supervision, familiarity with relevant state and federal regulations, familiarity with state and federal grant processes, advanced MMARS and COMMBUYS experience, and demonstrated leadership.

Wastewater Operator

The Town of Somerset is accepting applications for the position of Wastewater Operator, a position responsible for assisting in the proper treatment operation of the Town’s Water Pollution Control Facility. Applicants must have MA Grade 4, 5, 6 or 7 Licensure. This position is 40 hours per week with rotating weekend overtime shifts. Duties

CDL B, and Massachusetts Hydraulics (2B) License or the ability to obtain within the first 6 months of employment.
Previous experience in water treatment or a related field is preferred but not mandatory.
Familiarity with heavy equipment operation is advantageous.
Basic math skills for calculations related to water treatment processes.
Ability to analyze data and make decisions based on findings.
Knowledge of tanker operations is a plus, especially in relation to transporting wastewater materials.

Exciting things are happening at our Hull, Massachusetts wastewater treatment facility!  The plant is undergoing a comprehensive upgrade that will make it a state-of-the-art Wastewater treatment facility able to handle anything that the New England weather and seasonal population can throw at it.  Each day presents different challenges and learning opportunities as we strive to maintain compliance and produce the highest quality water for the local citizens while construction happens concurrently.

 

Our Hull, MA staff is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant and collections system, including remote pump stations. If you enjoy working outdoors protecting nature’s precious resource, water, this position is for you.  Candidates utilize basic mechanical and pumping equipment repair skills and have experience with electrical systems to provide maintenance and repair around the facility.   Our operators participate in an “on call” rotation for plant coverage outside normal workday hours and shifts will include weekends.

 

In this role you will be directly involved with the overall daily operations and general maintenance of equipment at the treatment facility. Duties will include, but not limited to, daily rounds, laboratory analysis, record keeping, process control, sludge thickening, maintenance projects and general facility and grounds maintenance.

 

Typical responsibilities include:

  • Participates in the daily operations and maintenance of the wastewater treatment facility as directed by the Plant/Project Manager.
  • Operates and maintains collection system pipelines and all associated components.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and repair of all plant equipment.
  • Daily inspection of operating sites.
  • Performs data entry and report generation, including data for preparing the Monthly Operating Report.

 

Pay Range: $23 – $30 an hour, Depending on qualifications and experience.

 

Schedule:
Normal workday hours are 7:00AM – 3:30 PM Monday through Friday with occasional weekend coverage and emergency storm coverage.  Must be able to work occasional holidays and as required for emergency call outs on rotation.

 

What will you need to succeed?

 

  • Massachusetts Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator License Grade 3 or higher preferred, or the ability to obtain through the operator’s exam or reciprocity. Woodard & Curran will provide training and will pay for the certification and licenses.
  • 1 – 3 year’s experience in a wastewater treatment facility, operation, and maintenance; or any equivalent combination of education.
  • Basic proficiency with computers, including an ability to work with: SCADA, Microsoft Word, Excel, Maintenance Management Programs, and other site specific systems.
  • Experience in the operation and maintenance pumps, compressors, and plumbing fixtures.
  • High School or trade school diploma is required, Associate’s Degree preferred.
  • A valid Massachusetts Class D motor vehicle operator’s license.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply instructions, drawings, and specifications for work assigned.
  • Must be able to lift or move up to 40 lbs on a regular basis.
  • Candidates will be required to complete a background check, pre-placement physical and drug screen before employment.

Water Systems Operator w/CDL

Portland Water District is currently looking for our next Water System Operator with a CDL license. Our WSO will learn to perform a broad range of tasks to ensure proper operation and maintenance of Portland Water District’s water system that provides continued flow to over 200,000 customers. The successful candidate must have the ability and desire to function in a team environment, positive communication problem solving skills, a willingness to learn, and be within one (1) hour of travel time from facility. The position will develop the necessary skills of water distribution and transmission procedures, water plant operations, and water utility service.

Preference will be given to applicants with a currently CDL and construction experience.

We offer a sign on bonus of $3,000 for a CDL license, in good standing.

The current starting hourly rate of pay is $25.98 for the probationary period of six months. Upon completion of the probationary period, the hourly rate of pay increases to $27.34. This apprentice position also features a career ladder where operators are trained in all aspects of the water system including distribution maintenance, treatment, pumping, storage, metering, cross connection, construction inspection, and asset management. Successful completion of the program and acquiring water distribution and treatment licenses, the hourly rate of pay increase to $30.76. Prior experience in these areas can accelerate movement within the career ladder.
