Water Treatment Plant Operator

Job Description:  Responsible for the efficient and effective operations of the surface water and groundwater treatment plants.  Operator maintains appropriate local, state and federal report forms in accordance with rules and statutes.  They acquire water samples and conduct test procedures, as required, as well as, monitor and adjust control apparatus in accordance with appropriate procedures. Constant inspection of plant equipment and machinery is necessary so the operator can adjust as needed and perform necessary cleaning or maintenance tasks.  Ability to keep detailed records of tests and graph recording consumption is necessary.  Operator fills towers, backwashes, filters and controls the rate of water flow to and from treatment plants, as required by appropriate procedure.  The operator is responsible for responding to emergency calls and operates emergency generators at plants and pumping stations.  Must have the ability to investigate customer calls regarding water related problems

Minimum Qualifications:  Requires knowledge of water treatment systems and operations equivalent to completion of a high school diploma along with advanced courses from a two-year college or technical school, and one to three years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Current State of New Hampshire Water Works Operator Certification – Treatment Grade I with the ability to acquire a Grade II certification within 1 year. Valid NH Driver’s License required.

Wastewater Treatment Operations Supervisor

Description:  This position is responsible for managing operations of the wastewater treatment facilities, along with wastewater pumping stations, to ensure regulatory compliance. This position is the operator-in-responsible-charge of the wastewater treatment facility. This position receives general supervision from the water and sewer manager and is evaluated by the water and sewer manager based upon the achievement of essential duties. The Wastewater Treatment Operations Supervisor provides direct supervision to the wastewater treatment plant operators and assists with supervision of the water & sewer maintenance technicians.

Minimum Qualifications:

-Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a bachelor’s degree in environmental science, civil engineering, chemistry, microbiology or related field.

-Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the position usually interpreted to require a five (5) to eight (8) years of technical and supervisory experience.

-Possession of wastewater treatment operator grade 4, NEWEA laboratory analyst grade 2 and NEWEA collection system operator grade 3 certifications. Certifications and licenses will continue to be maintained over the course of employment.

-Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of New Hampshire for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Water/Wastewater Maintenance Technician

Requirements:  The Town of Exeter is currently seeking a full time Water/Wastewater Maintenance Technician for its Water & Sewer department.  Individual will be responsible to operate and maintain the mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and chemical systems.

Assistant Sewer Superintendent

 

 

Assistant Superintendent Salary Range: $70,000 – $80,000 depending on qualifications

 

Position Requirements:

Candidate must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent and maintain a valid driver’s license. An Associated degree in science or a technical related field strongly preferred. Applicants must possess a Massachusetts Grade 3 or 4 wastewater operator license and have at least 4 years’ experience in wastewater or a related field. The applicant should have environmental knowledge of methods, techniques, and practices of wastewater treatment laboratory skills. Also, the applicant must have fundamental computer skills, strong organizational skills, and demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills.  Applicants will work 4 hours of overtime Saturday & Sunday every third weekend and a maximum of four holidays (4 hours) per year. Applicant must be able to serve 24-hour emergency on call rotation and any overtime as assigned.

Essential Functions:

·         This is a Lab/Maintenance/Administrative position.

·         Participates in the daily operation of the treatment plant and the sewage pumping stations; assists the superintendent in monitoring and controlling the plant’s wastewater treatment process.

·         Analyzes and evaluates operation, laboratory, and maintenance functions and records; applies appropriate corrective measures to mitigate potential problems and restore proper operating standards and methods to mechanical and biological processes.

·         Prepares necessary reports for review by supervisors; submits recommendations of plant needs as required by the Superintendent.

·         Performs laboratory tests for process control and compliance monitoring; samples influent and effluent for pH, T.S.S, BOD5, Ammonia, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, E-coli and PFAS; performs additional tests as required; monitors computer readings to ensure efficient plant operation; performs other various processes in the treatment system and analyzes results.

·         Prepares samples for outside laboratory analysis.

·         Conduct preventative & corrective maintenance on plant equipment.

·         Assist in the grounds keeping & upkeeping of WWTP site and buildings.

·         In the absence of the Sewer Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent has direct responsibility for the overall administration, operation and maintenance of the WWTP.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill:

·         Thorough knowledge of the principles and operating procedures of wastewater treatment and sanitary sewer systems. Working knowledge of the materials, methods, and techniques of wastewater treatment, and state and federal pollution control regulations.

·         Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

The following minimum Certifications and/or Licenses are required:

Massachusetts Grade 3 or 4 Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification

Massachusetts Class D Driver’s License

Assistant Wastewater Superintendent/Senior Project Manager

The Town of Falmouth seeks a highly motivated, experienced professional to serve as our Assistant Wastewater Superintendent and assist the Wastewater Superintendent with the technical affairs of our DPW’s Wastewater Division. This is a full-time, year-round exempt position with full benefits.

The Town is committed to improving the water quality of our coastal ponds through drafting watershed management plans and executing wastewater management projects. The Assistant Wastewater Superintendent will play an important role in current and anticipated major projects such as treatment plant upgrades, sewer system expansions, and the development of a new ocean outfall for treated wastewater discharge.  In addition to conducting technical work, this position will manage the in-house coordination of important aspects of these projects, including coordination with engineering consultants who have been contracted for the planning, design, and construction administration of major projects.

Under the general direction of the Wastewater Superintendent, the Assistant Wastewater Superintendent will facilitate the planning, permitting, design, bid, construction, and general implementation of wastewater management projects and activities.  This position will assist with contract management, track budgets and progress/schedules, review technical reports and plans, maintain project records, prepare various reports, and coordinate with other departments and agencies. For smaller projects that are not contracted out to a consultant, the Assistant Wastewater Superintendent will develop scopes of work and develop/manage solicitation documents in accordance with Massachusetts public procurement laws. This position will also review plans, permit applications, and calculations for private project wastewater projects, including connections and connection modifications.

In the absence of the Wastewater Superintendent, this position will manage the administrative affairs of the Wastewater Division and supervise up to ten (10) full-time employees. This position will also attend and may present at public meetings regarding Wastewater Division activities, including some evening meetings.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with an environmental focus, environmental engineering, or a related field and five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in wastewater or utility system design, planning, management, and/or operations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position. Candidates must have the ability to prepare and review technical documents. Municipal experience and experience with planning and permitting preferred.

The ideal candidate has strong project management, computer, and organizational skills. The successful applicant also has the ability to work independently on long-term planning and management tasks and the ability to effectively and diplomatically communicate wastewater principles and projects to the general public and regulatory agencies.

Expected Starting Salary Range: Step 1 ($89,752/year) – Step 8 ($113,422/year), commensurate with qualifications and experience, with room to advance along the 10-step pay scale.

Sign-on bonus of $2,500 after 60 days of employment and an additional $2,500 to be paid after one year of employment.

The Community Specialist will work with a variety of small systems operators, board members, community leaders and homeowners.

  • Work as a team member to support the objectives of the Community Resources division.
