Deployment Engineer

The Deployment and Support Team is responsible for civil, hydraulic, hydrologic, electrical, control, and mechanical design; planning and executing fieldwork; commissioning and provisioning systems; and supporting existing systems. In addition to collaborative internal work, this position will also require interfacing with customers, subcontractors, and other stakeholders. The Deployment and Support Team touches every aspect of deploying a vertically integrated stormwater management solution: from civil engineering to product development.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to,
– Direct customer communications
– Plan, coordinate, and execute field commissionings (construction quality assurance, startup, and testing)
– Remote troubleshooting and support of deployed projects
– Complete and review mechanical, electrical, and civil design drawings
– Execute hydrologic calculations and design
– Large dataset analysis and reporting
– Configure Opti’s continuous monitoring and adaptive control technology to meet customer objectives
– Specify sensors, actuated valves, and other hardware
– Collaborate with the Project Delivery, Product Development, and Marketing Teams

This position will report to Opti’s Manager of Deployment and Support and will be instrumental in designing and deploying projects with urgency and the highest quality.

You will be working with a group of passionate and talented civil, mechanical and software engineers and scientists who are committed to Opti’s vision of more efficient cities and safer and cleaner water.

Requirements
Preferred candidates will hold a Bachelors or Masters degree in Civil, Mechanical, or electrical engineering, and have 1-3 years of professional experience. A background in water resources is preferred.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Takes and records readings of plant equipment, including temperature, pressure, and vacuum.  Operates a variety of pumps, valves, gates, and switches in order to operate the plant equipment.  Responds to alarms or operational problems within plant property and at remote locations and takes corrective action based on defined procedures or supervisor direction.  Cleans plant equipment and facilities and maintains a safe working environment.  Frequently requires operation of a forklift, Bobcat, front end loader, sweeper, scum truck, and/or pick-up truck.  Collects samples, performs standard tests, and records results; notifies supervisor if readings are abnormal.  Assists other operators and plant staff with cleaning, maintaining, repairing, and installing plant equipment.  Receives hazardous materials (chemical deliveries) and completes appropriate paperwork.  Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.   As required, to drive a facility vehicle on or off site.  Medium Work: exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION:  High School Diploma or G.E.D. as required and authorized by Chapter 42-17.4 of the RI General Laws of 1956, as amended (RIGL).

EXPERIENCE:  Performance in basic maintenance. Following instructions. Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.  Cleaning and sanitation principles and practices.

Job Title:    Deputy Director Water Operations

The Springfield Water and Sewer Commission (SWSC) is seeking a highly motivated and innovative candidate to work as the Deputy Director of Water Operations at our West Parish Filters facility in Westfield, MA. The Deputy Director of Water Operations (DDWO) is responsible for supporting the Director of Water Operations in managing all aspects of the water supply system.  The responsibilities in the water operations division include:  supervision of water system operations, supervision of mid-level managers and resident managers, supervisory roles and assignments associated with water treatment, water transmission, water supply, water storage, power plant operations, construction projects, watershed management, and various operation and maintenance projects.  The DDWO shall have the ability to assist the Director with the management of capital construction projects.

About SWSC:   SWSC was established in 1996 as an independently operated and managed regional water and wastewater utility. SWSC employs approximately 250 people in roles ranging from engineering, laboratory, construction, union labor, customer service, and professional services, all of which serve 250,000 retail and wholesale customers in the lower Pioneer Valley through a regional water and wastewater infrastructure system. Governing oversight is provided by a three-member Board of Commissioners, appointed and approved by the Mayor of Springfield and City Council, with an executive director managing day-to-day operations. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Oversee the daily water system operations, from the watershed, dams and reservoirs, transmission mains, power plant operations, water treatment, water storage operations and finished water transmission lines.
  • Ability to manage capital projects including the development of capital project requests and schedules, preparation of contracts with consulting engineers, the review of system design, preparation of contract documents, bidding and administration during construction.
  • Assist with generation of proposals, specifications, and schedules, cost estimates, change orders, drawings, record sketches, and other contract documents.

  • Ability to manage the water connections and technical communications with water wholesale communities.

  • Assist with the Ludlow Reservoir Public Access Program and public access in the Little River Watershed.
  • Responsible for the implementation of safety, security, emergency water supply plan, and vulnerability assessments plans.
  • Responsible for the implementation and compliance with the Risk Management Plan.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations.
  • Oversee the installation and operations of various security systems; dam monitoring systems, SCADA systems and the continuous monitoring of these systems.
  • Assist with the safety program and safety training.
  • Assist the engineering division with water supply, treatment and storage infrastructure upgrades, repairs and inspections.
  • Assist with field activities such as surveys, water quality sampling, and construction oversight.
  • Define, review, and administer various facility and project budgets, perform cost estimating, project scheduling, and progress report preparation.
  • Develops and implements capital improvement plans.
  • Work positively and effectively with the Engineering and Technical Services Department Engineers, Scientists, Managers and Technicians.
  • Staff management including the hiring of new staff and any disciplinary actions.
  • May be required to approve staff payroll.
  • Ability to review spending requests and approve/deny spending requests using the purchase order system.
  • Ability to learn and administer the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Assist with general office functions including word processing, document preparation, photocopying, filing, archiving, library organizing, report preparation etc.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:   The abilities required include but are not limited to the following:

  • Detailed knowledge of all regulations applicable to the water system operation.
  • Expert knowledge of water treatment processes and water system operations.

  • Knowledge of computer applications including Excel, Word, hydraulic modeling, and GIS and other computer applications.
  • Ability to work within confined spaces with proper training.
  • Ability to interact with traffic control around construction sites.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

  • Bachelor degree in engineering or a related field.  Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Ten (10) years’ experience working for and in responsible charge of municipal water system; or acceptable related experience.
  • Ability to use a personal computer and associated software and programs for engineering analyses, scheduling, database management, document preparation, and general information management.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Massachusetts Driver’s License.

Based in our Woburn, Massachusetts office, the OA will report to the Executive Director, provide support and coordination services to staff, members, committees and partner organizations, and serve as a primary point of contact with the general public.

Qualifications

Additional Information:

Benefits provided but not included in salary range: Vacation, personal and sick leave, health, dental, disability, and retirement plan. This position requires the successful candidate to work five days a week, 7 ½ hours a day, with the possible need for infrequent night and weekend work.  Duties are preformed largely in an office setting, with occasional travel to adjoining states for which private means of transportation must be available. Travel may be required up to 15% of the time. Operating systems are a MAC-based work environment, knowledge of PCs is helpful.

Environment Analyst: Drinking Water Specialist

The New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC) and the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) Bureau of Water Supply Protection (BWSP) are seeking highly organized and detail-oriented candidates for an Environmental Analyst – Drinking Water Specialist to implement various source water and drinking water assessment, protection, sampling and treatment programs, including support to public water systems and local municipalities for developing Source Water Protection Programs and updates to existing Source Water Assessment Plans (SWAPs).

The incumbent will coordinate directly with regional NEIWPCC staff based in the four NYSDOH Regional Offices (Metropolitan, Capital, Central and Western) on these matters. Incumbent may also provide technical assistance to water suppliers, regional environmental health staff, and local health department staff on source water protection strategy implementation and water sample collection and analytical testing for physical, biological, radiological and chemical contaminant.  Will develop written materials to provide guidance and training for local municipalities, governmental and non-governmental agencies, and local health departments (LHDs) on source water protection strategies and implementation. Will provide support for associated programs by implementing procedures and performing sampling and testing to evaluate compliance and will develop concise and coherent multi-media documents for communicating program activities and accomplishments.

The successful candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, geology, hydrogeology, hydrology, environmental health, natural science, toxicology, or public health and must have knowledge and understanding of state and federal environmental regulations. Knowledge of Safe Drinking Water Act and SWAP programs, as well as groundwater and surface water hydrology required. Candidate must possess excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and have demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Excellent computer skills including Geographical Information Systems (GIS) required.
