A delegation of NEWEA members, led by our Government Affairs Committee Chair Peter Grose, traveled to Washington, DC in mid-April to make a pitch to our Senators and Congressmen for support of clean water in New England and our nation. We had three main focuses on this trip; explaining to our federal legislators what is important to us as water quality professionals, learning more about the status of clean water legislation and building working relationships. The signature event was our 2015 Congressional Clean Water Breakfast, held in the Rayburn House Office Building on April 15th. Our speakers included legislators, regulators, utilities and water organizations. Our other major activity for getting our message out and strengthening relationships with our legislators were the meetings we had on Capitol Hill. Our NEWEA contingent was very busy April 14th and 15th meeting with 25 senators, representatives and their aides at their offices. While at these meetings we offered, as NEWEA members, to serve as “boots on the ground” resources for providing information and insights to our federal elected officials and their aides. The NEWEA Congressional Briefing was coordinated with the National Water Policy Fly-in again this year. This event was sponsored by WEF, NACWA, WERF and WateReuse which brought in visitors from across the country to engage congress with activities similar to our own.
