NEWEA Funds Facilitate Learning and Hands-On Experience

Last year, the NEWEA Humanitarian Assistance & Grant Committee financially backed a project to gain access to a large area of land for educational use at Bacon Academy in Colchester, CT. The land, separated from school grounds by a large brook, required a footbridge for student access, and NEWEA’s support allowed such a bridge to be built.

The project, headed by teacher Joe Hage, provided an enriching experience for students interested in engineering and construction, who were engaged during the planning and building of the bridge. Since its completion, the bridge has continued to benefit students; now, the land to which the bridge leads plays a large role in environmental science classes at the high school.

NEWEA would like to thank member Tom Tyler for providing updates on Bacon Academy’s project and providing photos of the bridge.
