SUMMARY
A Wastewater Engineer is responsible for management and administration of various tasks and programs within the LRWWU Engineering Division. A Wastewater Engineer provides technical support and project management assistance to the Wastewater Engineering Manager, the Wastewater Engineering Supervisor, and other division staff.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • A bachelor’s degree in civil/environmental engineering, environmental studies, physical sciences, or a comparable area of study is required.
  • Certification as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) is preferred.
  • Experience with engineering design, project management is required and program administration, especially in the municipal wastewater treatment industry, is preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS

  • Engineer-In-Training certification is preferred.
  • Valid motor vehicle license is required; commercial driver’s license is preferred.
  • Wastewater treatment operator’s and wastewater collection system licenses are preferred.

Water & Air Treatment System Operator

The Schnitzer Steel Water and Air Treatment System Operator reports directly to the Regional Environmental Manager, and indirectly to the Regional Directors. The System Operator is responsible for implementation of, and compliance with, company policies and procedural plans related to all environmental media; including air, stormwater, groundwater, waste water, solid, and/or hazardous waste. S/He assists the Regional Environmental Managers by operating and maintaining environmental control systems (stormwater treatment systems and air discharge emission control systems) in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local environmental laws, standards, and permits; and has responsibility for maintaining facility compliance with all applicable ECS permit conditions.

 

This position has direct responsibility for operating environmental control systems, conducting on-site fieldwork associated with sampling, monitoring, observing and recording environmental data; and providing accurate and useful information to the Regional Environmental Managers and facility managers (upon request). This person assists in the overall planning, design, installation, and has direct first line responsibility for effective operation of environmental control systems and associated metering and/or measuring devices. This person may also assist the Regional Environmental Managers in providing immediate environmental emergency responses to environmental control systems upset conditions, environmental incidents, spills, releases, and accidents. S/He provides appropriate notifications to management and appropriate regulatory agencies in consultation with the Regional Environmental Managers and/or national environmental staff.

 

This position operates within flexible parameters.  The primary goal of this position is to maintain and operate environmental control systems at multiple facilities to ensure compliance with State and Federal regulations, including conditions of applicable permits, regulatory orders, or other agreements, in a safe, effective, and efficient manner.

 

Qualifications:

  • Extensive applied environmental or manufacturing control system operational experience is an essential qualification requirement.
  • Minimum of three to five years’ experience operating environmental or manufacturing control systems including PLC programming and use, conducting routine maintenance and system troubleshooting, water and air sampling, managing permit compliance activities, and generating/maintaining permit-required system operation records.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or other applied science discipline is preferred, but not required.
  • This position requires possession of a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive an automobile.
  • Ideal candidate possesses an ability to apply principles of logical and scientific thinking to define problems; collect data; establish facts; draw valid conclusions in controlled situations; and read and understand engineering plans and specifications to rapidly and effectively evaluate system performance and repair control system malfunctions when necessary.
  • Preference for person with strong demonstrated experience operating and maintaining environmental or manufacturing control systems and maintaining associated permit-required compliance documentation.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills are required (ability to communicate in a professional manner in person, written documents and by e-mail/text/phone).
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a Massachusetts Grade 2 Wastewater Treatment Operator License.
  • Must be certified or be able to obtain certification to assess visual emissions for opacity using EPA Method 9 criteria.
  • Software proficiency requirements include: Microsoft Office Suite, environmental management systems, environmental control systems testing or analytical programs, and PLC operation packages.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental programs and regulations with approved sampling techniques and procedures is a plus.

We are looking for a Waste Water Treatment Operator to be responsible for the operation and administration of the waste water pre-treatment plant in compliance with regulatory requirements.  This is an overnight position, with shifts running from 8:30am – 4:30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and 5pm – 5am on Wednesdays and some Sundays. The position will be required to backfill staffing outages and serve in an on-call capacity as needed.

Position Responsibilities

•        Responsible for all tasks in support of compliant operation of the wastewater treatment plant

•        Performs all tasks to successfully operate wastewater treatment plant in full compliance with operating permit

•        Performs mechanical and electrical preventive maintenance as required

•        Initiates, as necessary, repairs to treatment system equipment, to include assessment and implementation of repairs to pumping, control and processing systems and controls

•        Promotes communication by writing reports on plant operations, productivity improvements and cost savings initiatives.  Provides, as necessary, information and data to Department Manager to support communications with local, state and or federal agencies

•        Keeps management informed of machinery and facility problems

•        Promotes quality control and strong and sustained communications with Environmental Health & Safety Department Manager

•        Performs routine preventative maintenance activities

•        Assists with revising WWTP operating procedures and compliance plans as necessary, assesses operational performance, and implements corrective actions as necessary with consultation to Department Manager

•        Serves as departmental resource assisting Department Manager to respond to varied environmental matters that may include water conservation, process optimization initiatives, compliance initiatives

•        Manages environmental, health and safety or process optimization projects on an as needed basis and as assigned

•        Is responsible for performing immediate repairs to mission critical wastewater treatment plant equipment

•        Serves as part of Home Market Food’s on call Emergency Response and First Responder Team on a 24/7 basis. Must be capable of arriving to HMF within an hour of receipt of emergency call

 

Position Requirements

•        1- 5 years of experience in industrial waste water operations, to include experience with and familiarity with varied chemical and mechanical waste treatment techniques, systems and technologies

•        Familiarity with basic chemistry, plumbing, electrical  & engineering principles is required

•        Ability to perform inspections, testing and repair of waste processing systems

•        Massachusetts Grade 3 Class Municipal Waste Water License  or higher required

•        Massachusetts Department of Safety Class 1 Hoisting License is desired but not required

•        OSHA 40 Hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response training is desired, as is OSHA 10- hour General Industry training (required to participate in company’s Occupational Safety and Environmental Training programs)

•        Knowledge of lock out tag out, arc flash, confined space entry practices and procedures and ability to participate in our respiratory protection program

•        Ability to evaluate and interpret process and engineering related drawings and specifications

•        Current First Aid and CPR certification is desired but not required

•        Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and computer systems

•        Familiarity with OSHA, MADEP, MWRA and EPA regulations is desirable

•        Proficiency in English language is required and the ability to quickly convey in concise, practical terms treatment plant operational conditions and any issues

Physical Demands & Requirements

 

•        Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions. However, on occasion tasks may require the usage of personal protective equipment (PPE) and may take place in confined spaces

•        Duties involve frequent walking, standing, lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying objects up to 80lbs

•        Must be able to frequently climb ladders to access mission critical operating equipment

•        Must be able to clearly view and inspect mixers/pumps located 12-14ft below an elevated tank platform

•        Must perform routine sampling and monitoring tasks

•        Must be able to pass a Pre-employment background screening, pre-employment physical exam, to include drug test, hearing test, vision test, back screen and physical assessment to perform essential job duties

The Town has an opportunity for an experienced Wastewater Operator to join the team at the Wastewater Treatment Facility.  The Wastewater Operator II position, referred to as the Chief of Operations, performs the duties of a foreman on a daily basis and is in charge of the treatment plant in the absence of the Wastewater Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent.  The position is responsible for process control of the entire plant, assigning operating staff to the liquid and solids handling systems, performing routine plant testing program and research work and providing the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent with information on treatment status and process efficiency, as well as some administrative tasks as needed.

 

The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent with additional course work as required by the RI Wastewater Board of Certification as well as a minimum of three (3) years of experience at a wastewater treatment facility as a plant operator holding a Grade II or higher State of RI Wastewater Operator’s License.  Candidates with a Grade III license are preferred.  Those without a Grade III license will be required to obtain one issued by the RI Board of Certification of Operators of Wastewater Treatment Facilities within twelve (12) months of hire.  In addition, the position requires a valid RI Driver’s license with a CDL Class B endorsement, and the successful candidate must hold, or have the ability to obtain one, within three (3) months of hire.  This position is considered essential, and must be available for all shifts and during emergency events.

The starting salary for this 40-hour/week Council 94 position is $46,806 or $22.50 per hour, and after successful completion of three month probation, increases to $49,792 or $23.93 per hour, and includes a full benefit package. The RI Department of Environmental Management’s Office of Water Resources is seeking a Professional Engineer to oversee a staff of engineers and scientists responsible for stormwater and flood control engineering reviews for all OWR land development permits and the issuance of Water Quality Certifications for other activities that may impact Waters of the State. Improving stormwater management is one of the most important water quality challenges for the Department and is an important component of most land development projects in the state – specifically to avoid flooding impacts and water quality impairments.

The supervisor will be responsible for important technical and policy decisions and maintaining the RI Stormwater Standards and Performance Criteria. This position is essential to the Department’s efforts to maintain the effectiveness and efficiencies of the Department’s regulatory programs.  Specifically, this position is responsible for ensuring that stormwater pollution control requirements are evaluated in a consistent manner through the permitting process and maintaining a high level of customer service.

The successful candidate will have a Master’s Degree in Civil/Environmental/Sanitary Engineering, Public Health, Environmental Health, Business or Public Administration, or related field and a current Professional Engineer license issued or recognized by the State of Rhode Island.

JOB SUMMARY

A GIS and Pipe Inspection Data Analyst will support the ongoing operation, maintenance, and dissemination of data applications in the GIS environment with a focus on pipeline condition assessment data.

Using internal robotic pipe condition assessment data they read and interpret maps, manipulate and understand data, and manage data entered into a CCTV condition assessment and GIS database. As a GIS and Pipe Inspection Data Analyst, the main responsibilities include managing, organizing, storing as well as accessing the information of the company for its Project Management Team and customers.

This position of a GIS and Pipe Inspection Data Analyst will be office based and work is performed under direction of a Project Manager. Occasionally required work beyond normal office hours in order to meet deadlines and handle workload. Occasionally may be required to be in the field to collect data and information as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

1.     Minimum two-year college diploma in Geographic Information Systems, Computer Sciences, Engineering Technology, or equivalent

2.     3 to 5 Years’ experience and knowledge with GIS databases and editing using ESRI ArcGIS software

3.     Proficient personal computer skills including Esri ArcGIS, Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Electronic Mail (Gmail) skills required

Technical

3.     Responsible for compiling and organizing GIS data from maps, databases, ect.

4.     Responsible for the collection of data in the field using Global Positioning Systems (GPS) units and working closely with field inspection technicians

5.     Responsible for the daily reporting and editing of municipal infrastructure data

6.     Ensure that quality assurance on new or revised data conforms to standard laid out in the GeoDatabase or any other applicable standard or policy

7.     Responsible for the conversion, import, in and out of the GIS systems and the CCTV inspection databases

8.     Prepare regular status reports and workload reports for the operations management team
