Position Overview

The Town of Waterford seeks a proven leader to direct the operations of its Public Works Department. The successful candidate will perform complex supervisory, administrative and professional work in planning, coordinating and supervising the operations of the Department of Public Works.  This role includes design, construction, maintenance and repair of town roads and related infrastructure; landfill and transfer station operations; vehicle and equipment repair; budget preparation and capital improvement requests; general building maintenance; tree warden responsibilities.

Qualifications

We seek a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering with a minimum of five years supervisory experience.  Connecticut registration as a Professional Engineer is preferred.  Public sector experience preferred.

Starting salary $100,000 – commensurate with ability and experience.   Excellent Benefits.

TITLE: UTILITY PERSON

  • Supervision Received: Works under the general direction of the Maintenance Manager or Assistant Maintenance Manager or his designee.
  • Supervision Exercised: None except when specifically assigned.
  • General Statement of Duties: Reads meters and charts, and records findings; keeps records; under general supervision assists in the operation of all equipment, valves, pumps, controls, etc. pertinent to wastewater treatment, and may assist in making adjustments; assists in the collection of samples. Under general supervision performs or assists in repair, maintenance and upkeep of The District’s Buildings and Grounds and Right-of-Way, including the operation and adjustment of all equipment pertinent to The District’s buildings and grounds and ROW; under general supervision assists in the repair, maintenance, upkeep and adjustment of all equipment pertinent to wastewater treatment facilities; does daily lubrication, greasing and oiling of all equipment as required; operates all equipment related to the upkeep of District properties including large and small trucks, tractors, power lawn mowers, power equipment and related equipment; performs general custodial duties; cleans equipment as required; does related work as required; ability to perform work requiring good physical condition. May work as a Mechanic in Training and/or a Operator in Training to improve his/her skills for advancement.
  • Minimum Skill and Ability: General practical knowledge of the duties of semi-skilled and unskilled labor practices. Ability to work with tools; ability to follow written and oral instructions; ability to keep records; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments on equipment; ability to get along with fellow workers; ability to follow and employ standard safety practices; ability to perform manual tasks requiring physical strength and endurance; some skill in the use and care of hand tools.
  • Experience and Training: Graduation from high school or vocational training school supplemented by at least one year of mechanical maintenance and repair experience, or at least one year of general building and grounds maintenance, or at least one year of related industry type of experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Must maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Physical and Work Environment: Minimum physical effort generally required in performing duties under typical office conditions. The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking over rough or difficult terrain; recurring sitting, standing, stooping, climbing or walking, working in limited access areas, walking on building roofs, lifting of moderately heavy items weighing 25 pounds, and may require the occasional lifting of objects weighing in excess of 25 pounds. The work may require specific physical characteristics and abilities such as, heightened strength, mobility, and dexterity.
  • Union Affiliation: This is a full time position in the Hourly Employees Union Local 1303, Chapter 218 of Council #4. Starting salary based on experience within the bargaining unit hourly wage: – $24.03-$27.06

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Takes and records readings of plant equipment, including temperature, pressure, and vacuum.  Operates a variety of pumps, valves, gates, and switches in order to operate the plant equipment.  Responds to alarms or operational problems within plant property and at remote locations and takes corrective action based on defined procedures or supervisor direction.  Cleans plant equipment and facilities and maintains a safe working environment.  Frequently requires operation of a forklift, Bobcat, front end loader, sweeper, scum truck, and/or pick-up truck.  Collects samples, performs standard tests, and records results; notifies supervisor if readings are abnormal.  Assists other operators and plant staff with cleaning, maintaining, repairing, and installing plant equipment.  Receives hazardous materials (chemical deliveries) and completes appropriate paperwork.  Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.   As required, to drive a facility vehicle on or off site.  Medium Work: exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION:  High School Diploma or G.E.D. as required and authorized by Chapter 42-17.4 of the RI General Laws of 1956, as amended (RIGL).

EXPERIENCE:  Performance in basic maintenance. Following instructions. Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.  Cleaning and sanitation principles and practices.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Within one year of appointment, must possess an Operator-In-Training (OIT) Grade I certification license for wastewater treatment plant.   Valid driver’s license in good standing is required at time of appointment.

What you’ll do:

  • This position will perform a variety of skilled, semi-skilled, and manual work in the cleaning, locating and inspection of the water distribution system and groundwater wells

Weston & Sampson Services is currently looking for a Wastewater Operator for the Cape Cod area with a minimum of 1-2 years of experience. (Grade 4 Wastewater license preferred) This individual will be responsible for managing multiple wastewater systems that involve composing sampling programs and standard operating procedures for operating and maintaining water systems in accordance with Massachusetts regulations.

The skills and knowledge required would usually be acquired with a Master’s Degree with a minimum of eight years experience related to the management of Public Works operations, including a minimum of four years supervisory/administrative experience or a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Business, with a minimum of ten years experience related to the management of in Public Works operations, including four years of supervisory/administrative experience. A combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the responsibilities of this position may be considered in lieu of stated education and experience requirements. Equipment Operator – Wastewater Division (Re-opened Job/Extended)

The Town of Kennebunkport, Maine, is seeking a full-time experienced and collaborative professional to fill the position of Wastewater Equipment Operator for its Wastewater Division of the Public Works Department. This position is full time, hourly, non-FLSA Exempt and reports to the Chief Treatment Plant Operator. Kennebunkport is a coastal municipality of 20 square miles and the Wastewater Division maintains 18 miles of gravity sewer lines, 14 major pump stations and 90 grinder pumps. The Treatment Plant is authorized to discharge up to 0.70 mgd. This position will assist in the operations of the Wastewater Treatment Plant, compost operation and maintaining the collection system.

Job Requirements: Applicants must possess a Maine Wastewater Operator License or the ability to obtain one within a year. Applicants must possess the skills and experience to maintain the wastewater treatment plant, and wastewater collection/discharge system. Strong computer skills, experience with SCADA programs preferred. Valid motor vehicle license with excellent driving record is required. Availability to work evenings and weekends. Overtime work is required for on-call weekend lab work. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Town officials, employees, vendors, residents, and members of the public. Must also be team oriented and participate with co-workers in the operation of equipment required to ensure proper operation of the wastewater system.
