Northeastern University Takes 3rd Place at WEFTEC’s National Student Design Competition

The Water Environment Federation (WEF) hosted the national student design competition in Chicago this past October during WEFTEC17, which is the largest annual water quality event in the world.

The Northeastern University team placed third in the Wastewater Competition, which saw the participation of 17 teams from across the country and Canada.

The winning Northeastern team project involved the design and modeling of the Lions Gate Secondary Wastewater Treatment Plant (LGSWWTP) in North Vancouver, British Columbia. The technologies chosen and designed for treatment were Integrated Fixed Film Activated Sludge (IFAS) and SHARON, respectively; the selection was accomplished through extensive modeling efforts. Additional sustainability goals were achieved through the recovery of three resources at the site: stormwater, energy, and biosolids. These are recovered through the design of a flow regulator tank and a wetland, production of biogas and biosolids in the anaerobic digesters, and the placement of solar panels on the roof. Multiple features have been incorporated into the design of the LGSWWTP in order to promote community involvement, such as an arrival plaza, a pond, a greenhouse, public benches, public paths, and educational opportunities.  The project was developed during the spring 2017 capstone course under the supervision of Prof. Onnis-Hayden of the Civil and Environmental Engineering department in partnership with CDM Smith.

NEWEA’s Student Activity Committee hosts a regional Student Design Competition in Spring. This competition is intended to promote “real world” design experience for students interested in pursuing an education and/or career in water engineering and sciences. Teams of student members within NEWEA are tasked to design and present a project that they have worked on together as a team. This competition is intended for both undergraduate and graduate students, typically completing a capstone project. Winning teams from each category will move on to the national competition at WEFTEC.   Learn More >>
