In this issue, we have spotlighted Laboratory Practices Committee Member, Tim Loftus. Tim has been a member of NEWEA for more than twenty years and has made a significant contribution to the NEWEA Voluntary Laboratory Analyst Certification Program as a test question writer. Tim’s full time position has him working as the Operations Manager and Chief Chemist at the Town of Webster, MA WWTP. Through this work he is responsible for producing approximately one billion gallons of clean water each year. Read More >>

The NEWEA Water for People Committee hosted its 10th annual softball tournament on Saturday, October 17th at Danehy Park in Cambridge, MA. The five teams were happy to have a beautiful, late-October day to put their skills on display. As is the norm now, teams arrived with custom uniforms and plenty of excitement to get things going. Everyone started to gather almost an hour before game time to enjoy breakfast from Dunkin Donuts and fresh fruit donated by Lystek and Boston Organics respectively. Read More >>
Volunteering on a NEWEA Committee is not just for the long time experts; input is valued from individuals at all levels of experience and interest in the Water and Environmental field. Your personal commitment can be custom tailored to your availability and interests. Levels of commitment may vary from a couple hours per quarter to a few hours per week. Volunteering on a NEWEA committee is a great opportunity for you to make new contacts, build leadership skills, find a mentor, and help shape the water quality field moving forward.Consider what you are good at, or where you would like to strengthen your skill set. Consider how you enjoy learning new things, meeting new people, making a difference in the environment. Reach out to committee chairs to learn more or go ahead and submit a committee application online.
Worried about overcommitting? In a recent survey, members indicated they spent on average 2 hours a month on NEWEA volunteer work and much of this work can be done remotely! Choose from one or more of our 44 active committees.
Dan Driscoll, City of Concord, NH
City of Concord, NH – Concord General Services’ Wastewater Treatment Superintendent, Mike Hanscom, will be retiring at the end of January after serving 21 years as superintendent and 30 years with the City of Concord. Dan Driscoll has been promoted as the new Wastewater Treatment Superintendent after working as a Wastewater Treatment Operations Supervisor with the City of Concord for five years, and before that was a treatment plant operator for the City of Manchester.The City of Concord appreciates Mike Hanscom’s dedicated years of service and congratulates Dan Driscoll on his new position.
Juli Liu and Ashley Dunn, Framingham DPW
Juli Liu and Ashley Dunn of the Framingham, MA Department of Public Works received a warm welcome from Laura Goldman’s 5th grade class at Barbieri School in Framingham on October 16th. Prior to their arrival, the students had been studying the water cycle, and the engineering design process. The students utilized the engineering design process to optimize a homemade water filter. Juli and Ashley attended class as guest experts, sharing facts about water, Framingham’s distribution and collection system, and the NEWEA school packets and presentation.
There was no shortage of questions or excitement from the class. The students proved to be very interested in all aspects of water and wastewater engineering, and exhibited a passion for environmental protection. The visit proved to be rewarding for all parties, and could be the beginning of a long and happy partnership between the Town DPW and this school.
The NEWEA Safety Committee congratulates Ross Elliott, Woodard & Curran for winning the 2016 Safety Logo Contest. His logo was chosen to help promote safety throughout all of New England by appearing on Safety Committee shirts for the next three years. Ross has been invited to join the Safety Committee for a group luncheon during the 2016 NEWEA Annual Conference where he will be presented with a winning-logo shirt of his choice.
