2008 NEWEA ENERGY SPECIALTY CONFERENCE, EXHIBIT AND TOUR

APRIL 22, 2008 - DOUBLETREE HOTEL, LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS

 

NEWEA’s newly created Energy Committee is proud to announce a one-day Energy Specialty Seminar, Exhibit and Tour to be held on Tuesday, April 22nd at the Doubletree Hotel in Lowell, MA.  This energy specialty conference will feature two concurrent technical tracks. Track 1, “Energy Use Management and Engineering the Energy Upgrade,” will focus on energy efficiency and conservation measures at wastewater treatment facilities. Track 2, “Alternative Energy and the Carbon Footprint,” will feature presentations on using renewable energy sources at treatment plants. A combined general session after lunch will discuss integrating energy efficiency and renewable energy. To conclude this spectacular event, a tour of the Lowell, Massachusetts Wastewater Treatment Facility will be given on Tuesday afternoon.

To complement the technical sessions, we will feature a select group of exhibitors, who will display the latest technologies and products with a keen interest in energy efficiency and renewable energy.

This one-day energy specialty event will focus on energy efficiency, conservation, and renewable energy sources for wastewater treatment facilities.

2008 NEWEA WATER FOR PEOPLE SPECIALTY SEMINAR

APRIL 29, 2008 - EPA LABORATORY, CHELMSFORD, MASSACHUSETTS

 

The New England Water Environment Association’s (NEWEA) Water For People Committee will be hosting a one-day specialty seminar, “Strategies for Managing Your Personnel During a Pandemic” on April 29th at the EPA Laboratory in Chelmsford, MA.  This one-day program will focus on how managers and operators can improve preparations for maintaining wastewater treatment operations during a flu pandemic or other natural disaster.  Seminar will provide an opportunity to discuss how the current operator shortage affects emergency planning in New England and in developing countries and how effective preplanning can mitigate the impacts that a flu pandemic can have on a department's operations.

2008 NEWEA CSO/WWI SPECIALTY SEMINAR & EXHIBIT

MAY 6 - 7, 2008 - RADISSON HOTEL, NASHUA, NEW HAMPSHIRE

 

NEWEA’s Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO)/Wet Weather Issues (WWI) Committee will be hosting a two-day CSO/WWI Specialty Conference, Exhibit and Tour on May 6-7th in Nashua, NH.  This specialty conference features 38 federal, state, municipal and consultant presenters; three concurrent sessions, exhibitor displays; a reception Tuesday evening as well as a tour to the Nashua Wastewater Treatment Facility.  We expect this seminar will attract over 200 attendees, including engineers, consultants, scientists, planners, operators, and representatives from state, local and federal agencies.

 

Tuesday’s program will begin with warm welcomes from CSO Committee Chair Matt Davis, NEWEA President Robert Cutone, and Nashua, NH Mayor Donnalee Lozeau. Nancy Wheatley of Water Resource Strategies; Roger Janson and Jim Hanlon of the EPA will bring us up-to-date on the status of the National Blending Policy. Following this, state regulators from Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts will let us know the status of CSO and other wet weather issues in their states.  

 

On Tuesday afternoon we will provide three concurrent technical sessions; Case studies from Upper Blackstone, Manchester, Greater Lawrence, Narragansett Bay Commission, Chicopee and Hartford MDC; session two will investigate CSO reduction, Boston’s city-wide model, water quality and sampling and session three will provide in-depth exploration of excess flow and stormwater treatment, buried and tunnel storage, screening & disinfection. A networking reception will conclude Tuesday’s technical program.

 

Wednesday’s program will start off with a presentation on the Merrimack River Study, followed by presentations by the Merrimack River Consortium Communities of Greater Lawrence, Lowell, Haverhill, Manchester and Nashua. To conclude this spectacular conference, an afternoon tour to the Nashua Wastewater Treatment Facility will be offered.

2008 NEWEA SPRING MEETING & EXHIBIT

2008 IWA NORTH AMERICAN MEMBRANE RESEARCH CONFERENCE - Cosponsored by NEWEA, AWWA and WEF AUGUST 10 - 13, 2008 - UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS, AMHERST, MAS SACHUSETTS

 

The University of Massachusetts, Amherst will host the 2008 IWA Membrane Research Conference August 10-13, 2008.  The conference will showcase advances in membrane technologies for water and wastewater treatment as well as novel membrane materials and processes.  The conference will provide a forum for discussion of these issues; all sessions will be 30-45 minute plenary sessions with time for questions and discussion.  Opportunities will also be provided for networking and group recreational activities.

NEWEA PLANT OPERATIONS SPECIALTY SEMINAR & EXHIBIT

Announcing!  The 2008 Plant Operations Specialty Seminar & Exhibit to be held on October 29th at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Worcester, MA.  This specialty seminar will concentrate on the operation of nutrient removal systems at New England wastewater treatment facilities that were designed to achieve low effluent nitrogen and phosphorous levels.  Speakers will present operational experiences with full and pilot scale biological and chemical nutrient removal processes that are intended to achieve nitrogen levels below 5 mg/l and phosphorous levels below 0.2 mg/l.

Abstracts based on actual operating experience at full scale and pilot scale wastewater treatment facilities that are currently removing, or are attempting to remove, nitrogen and phosphorous to low levels are desirable.  Abstracts should focus on the configuration, operation, and control of the nutrient removal processes.  Topics of interest for this conference include:

 

·         Operations data from pilot and full scale facilities

·         Start-up experience of the nutrient removal process

·         Seasonal variations in operation - cold weather operation/warm weather operation

·         Consistency in meeting permit limits

·         Supplemental carbon and alkalinity addition for nitrogen removal

This NEWEA/NEBRA conference and exhibits is a great forum to learn the latest trends in the management of biosolids and residuals and is a “must” for all those involved in the challenge of managing biosolids and residuals in New England and eastern Canada.  Attending the conference is also a wonderful opportunity to mingle and network while viewing the latest residuals management products and services in the exhibit area during breaks and the social hour - and to have some fun!  Contact training hours will be awarded for operator re-certification in participating states. 

 

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS - The Committee is inviting the submission of abstracts for presentations and papers for this conference.  We welcome all abstracts pertaining to the management of biosolids and residuals.  We are particularly interested in abstracts addressing the following topics:

 

 

Preferred papers are those that provide clear results from real projects and research and/or summarize significant developments, and/or generally advance the profession. Each year, the attendees of this conference are the leaders in biosolids and residuals management in New England and eastern Canada.  Think about what they should know!  That’s what this conference aims to deliver. 

 

Please submit a short abstract (~250 words), including paper title and author(s). Include presenting author’s affiliation, title, address and telephone number.  Abstracts must be submitted by Friday May 30, 2008.  Submit abstracts on-line at http://www.newea.org/abstract_res_bios_2008/  Written papers will not be mandatory.  However, papers that are submitted may also be considered for the NEWEA January annual conference in Boston and publication in the NEWEA Journal.
