NEWEA supports a variety of activities that assist College Students entering the world of water resources and wastewater treatment, both to encourage understanding of the complex issues we face today and to attract young people to a career in the industry.

Student Chapters Minimize

NEWEA currently sponsors two student chapters:

Wentworth Institute of Technology, established in 1996

Northeastern University, established in 2004

Forming a student chapter is a great way to meet other enthusiastic students in the environmental field and to build a community.  Guidelines for establishing a student chapter.

Student Paper Competition Minimize

An undergraduate paper competition is held in conjunction with the Annual NEWEA Student Day.  The student day is held annually in May at a local college in the New England area.  Cash prizes are awarded to undergraduate students (2nd year and beyond) based on the strength of their written and oral presentation.  The winner of the paper competition will receive a $500 cash prize plus travel to attend WEFTEC, a national meeting, to present the winning paper in a poster session.  The winning paper will also be published in NEWEA's Journal and eligible to compete in WEF's national competition!


2011 STUDENT PAPER COMPETITION

Have you written a paper dealing with water pollution control, water quality problems, water‐related
concerns, hazardous waste, or related areas? Are you working on a class project, or a research project, and would like to present your findings? You are invited to submit a paper for the NEWEA Student Paper Competition hosted this year by Northeastern University. Undergraduates only!

Location: Egan Engineering/Science Research Center, Room 440 (Northeastern Campus)
Date: April 23rd, 2011 (papers due April 1)
Time: 1pm—5pm

Prize for winner includes $500 and money for travel to attend WEFTEC to present the winning paper in a poster session. The winning paper will also be published in NEWEA’s Journal and eligible to compete in WEF’s national competition! 2nd and 3rd place also receive a $200 and $100 prize*!

Annual Conference Minimize

The NEWEA Annual Conference is held annually at the end of January in Boston, MA.  Students may attend the conference free of charge.

Scholarships Minimize

NEWEA offers scholarships to deserving students in undergraduate, graduate and for individuals enrolled in continuing education/training programs. The national organization, WEF also offers a scholarship.

NEWEA has over 22 technical committees.  Volunteering on a NEWEA committee is a great opportunity for you to build leadership skills, gain industry recognition and help shape the water quality field.
